Need help with most fragile release of Backup Exec,
All of sudden AVVI \ non GRT backup for a Unix machine started failling.
Nothing is changed with this machine or enviorment side (beside 2 hotfixes from symantec for BE),
I guess, it is just the attention seeking tendency of the BE, that cannot see me working on other Imp assignments.

I have a SBS 2008 server with HP Storageworks Ultrium 448 SAS, and Backup Exec 12.5. The issue is that when the backup job starts - it says queued and stays like that for ages. If I try inventory - says no media servers available. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the backup tape using Symantec drivers - same thing. Tried newest HP driver - same thing. Tried the driver suggested from Microsoft updates - same issue. Repairing the backup exec did not help. The only strange thing that I noticed is that after every install, the device shows in Backup exec that it is in use. I tested the device with HP storageworks and library tools - it is visible, and does not report any issues.
What can be the problem with that device, and is it possible for some reason the Backup Exec to be broken ?
I use SR2011 on SBS 2003.
I keep on getting an error in the bottom right icon tray saying Status - Attention Needed, Offsite copy 16%.
When I double click the icon it opens SR2011 and a bar appears saying "Connecting to [server]" which gets stuck towards the end. The only solution is to restart the server which is quite a bother. I have checked both disks and they have sufficient space for the backup. After a restart it all works fine for a few days and then I get the problem again. This is a recent problem and I have been running this software smoothly for some time.
Please can you advise how I can resolve this.

I’m having a problem with Backup Exec and not backing up any jobs at all the moment – the job status states on all jobs (disks and tape) ‘Ready; no media servers are available’. I am running BE 2010 R3 with all latest patches and updates on a Server 2008 SP2 (x64) box.
This is both Disk backups and tape backups – I have done the following: -
· Ensured all updates are up to date via LiveUpdate
· Restarted all BE services
· Paused ALL devices, disable and re-enable
· Uninstalled the drivers for the tape drive and disk, restarted the server (a couple of times), re-installed the drivers again
Done the above to no avail and still comes up with that message (Ready; no media server are available)
On the devices tab, I noticed that the media server states ‘Discovering Devices’. After I restart the services or server, all the devices are offline and I have to enable them manually but still states this message ‘Discovering Devices’. When I attempt to perform a job, then it comes up with that message in the job status and hangs there and no way I know of getting rid of it.
At the moment none of my backups jobs are performing. Any other things I can try?

We have been using Netbackup with SLP duplications for over a year with no issues. Suddenly within the last two weeks I am having issues with duplications of SLP duplication from Advanced disk to tape of Exchange GRT backups. This has happened with a regular exchange database and also now a DAG setup. It does not happen for all images though, for the DAG the backup makes mulitple images and others duplicate fine but one seems to get stuck. In the activity monitor all I see is the SLP job with the two duplication jobs (we are copying to two tapes) and they show the operation as mounting. I have left them there for over a day and the state never changes.
This is Netbackup 7.1 running on Windows 2008 R2. We only have one master/media server.

This job only started last night since I paused SLP, killed the service so the job stopped and froze the tape it was using because I thought maybe it was an issue with the tape. I had left it run or over a day before that and there was no change. Always in state "mounting"
I am not sure where to look to see what the issue is since I don't know to much about the netbackup log structure. What I do find odd is that the file list is empty (but I read this is normal sometimes until the duplication reaches a certain stage). I do need to find a solution though as the backup is filling up our disk and I can't run others. Also when the image cleanup tries to run it hangs when it reaches this client. I am guessing because it wants the duplication to be done first??
I really need a solution as I need to get these jobs done.

I've been trying to automate what is easily the most tedius part of my job: image duplication to tape.
Here's a little background about our environment (my apologies if this gets too long). If I leave anything pertinent out, please ask. We have a number of physical servers that we use NB to backup. Over the weekend, we have full backups of both servers and SQL databases for the entire physical server environment written to our SAN. There are three logical drives that exist purely for these images. Currently, every Tuesday morning, I open NB, navigate to the Catalog node and perform a query by setting the following:
- Action: Duplicate
- Disk Types: Basic Disk
- Media Server: <our media server>
- Path: E:\Fulls (one of the three logical drives on our SAN).
- Between: 12/28 (Friday) - And: 12/31: (Monday)
- Copies: Primary Copy
- Policy: All Policies
- Policy Type: All Policy Types
- Client: All Clients
This returns a list of about 660 images. I then go through the results, selecting the images in groups of 2-10 using Shift+Click, right click the selection, and then select Duplicate. I then, on the Setup Duplication Variables dialog box, configure the following:
- Storage Unit: <appropriate storage unit>
- Volume Pool: <appropriate volume pool>
- Retention: <2 weeks / Infinity> <-- depends on which week of the month.
- If This Copy Fails: Continue
- Media Owner: leave blank.
After I've done this for each image returned by the intial query, I run it two more times on the two additional SAN drives. As you can probably guess, this mind-numbing torture.
I've been working during various slow times (like now) to develop a script to automate this. Back in October, I thought I was successful, until I needed to restore a SQL database when lo-and-behold, that image was *NOT* saved off to tape!!! The only thing I can figure out is that the command I had used in my script to list the backups available for to-tape duplication was not including the SQL backups, just the server backups (does that make sense?).
The line I *believe* is giving me trouble is this one:
bpimagelist.exe -d $StartDate -e $EndDate -idonly -M chcbkpsvr02 -st FULL > C:\Scripts\Test\ExportedDupes_$Today.txt
... any ideas?

We have issues with vault jobs
IF_OTHER_VAULT_PROBLEM: vault job has not completed successfully since 12/21/12. We found vault job from 12/24/12 hung. Cancelled and restarted. Job processed to 76% and hung again.

Ok...next challenge. I inserted an old tape full backup of my previous file server shares to inventory and catalog to test that I can indeed pull data from the old tapes and I got the following error "The password provided in the job properties does not match the password for this media." We/I (inherited the old configuration) did not password protect the tapes unless it was automatcially applied by BEX10d when new tapes were added to the media set during preconfigured backup jobs ...configured by my predecessor. I don't think so b/c i have worked with these tapes before to do restores and did not require to enter a password.
I came across a users having the same error and they were referred to TECH194494. Is the only work around? If so, i'd need some clarification. I don't understand in the solution how runnnig the commands from the BEMCLI circumvents the password prompt issue for the tape in BEX2012. Can anyone explain the commands (eg. "enter password on the blank line" then "use the $pass variable in the catalog job"..get-bemedia B2D000031??). "To catalog backup to disk media", B2D, does not seem to refer to Tape media or restore from tape media.

We have Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 to backup our data on a set of HP LTO-2 Ultrium 400GB Data Cartridge (C7972A) tapes, the problem is that the tape only backup 280gb instead of its full capacity 400gb, kindly what I am missing here?

Hi there, here is another of the BE2012 strange behavior case (as i see it):
1) I have multiple servers/jobs with full backup configured daily evening having "keep data for - 1 week" & then a Duplicate to Tape Stage added with Source being "Most Recent Full backup" scheduled on the Last day of every Month (strange? yea..) after the full backup end time..
Now when the Duplicate to tape gets executed successfully i notice that it is taking not the Last Full backup but last 7 full backups (as keep data for 1 week is selected) which is consuming the storage on the tape device.. Can it be explained & solved for me???
2) Also some jobs are configured as Weekly Full backups and keeping data for 4 weeks. Duplicate to tape stage set with Source as "All Backups" scheduled time set after the end time of the weekly full job..
This gets executed and duplicates only the Last Full Weekly backup (and not All Backups).. Not as expected again..
Please let me know if this is a bug or am i doing something wrong?
