Archiving a catalog

Hi Folks..

There is space issue on my Catalog.

For some months, we are bound to take all backups with infinite retention.

Thus, we decided to archive the catalog. Now when i archive the catalog, the archival is successull.

When i check it through bpcatlist -online -before-days <> command, after my archival process, i dont see any information in the output. Thus i consider whatever i am archiving is proper. Even no error are seen in activity monitor or in putty session from where i fored the ./bpcatlist command.

But unfortunately i don't see any reduction in my catalog size. Kindly help me identify the issue.

Hi,

I need some information.

one of my client is using netbackup version 6.5.1 on windows 2003 master/media server and also all netbackup physical clients, database, exchange and virtual machine servers are in same version 6.5.1

Now, iam going to configure new media server with Netbackup version 7.1, with existing master/media server with netbackup version 6.5.1, so I need to upgrade master server also with same version 7.1,

my question is,

I will upgrade master server 7.1 from 6.5.1, is there any other changes need to be done ? and it won´t affect backups for  netbackup physical clients, database, exchange and virtual machine servers with version 6.5.1 ?

Hello, I currently get this error on all tape backups.  This started after I was having a problem with a downed drive so I deleted all drives and robot and ran device config to re-add them.  All looks good to me otherwise...I'm able to run inventory, robtest detects robot ok, no other errors in gui.

I've done so far:

- Restart nb services

- Restarted nb server

- Seeing these errors in app log:

TLD(0) [4020] Lock of B:\VERITAS\Volmgr\misc\tldcd.lock failed with LOCK_OP_FAILED: Error: -3

Unknown robot number 0, from host us010017.na.ina.com

TLD(0) unavailable: initialization failed: Robot number does not exist

Dupliactions fail with error 2107

we have netbackup 7.5 and We setup new DD620’s in multiple offices (did not have DD’s in office before this). They are basically configured the same and SLP's are the same. We run a backup to the local DD in each office then they all duplicate to the same DD offsite. All the backups to local DD are successful but the duplication fails in an office and is successful in others.

Error: Requested media server does not have credentials or is not configured for the storage server(2107)

btbkp02_maddd02 is the offsite DD that the duplication goes to. I can run a backup from the same media server directly to btbkp02_maddd02 but duplications fail.

 

 

I found tech note: HOWTO72917

It recommends a solution but doesn’t show the steps to achieve the solution?

Recommended Action: Optimized duplication requires a media server with credentials for both the read side and write side storage servers. Add the needed credentials or limit the media servers that the write side storage unit calls out to those that are credentialed for the read media.

Virtual machine servers appear after VMware vSphere backup

Dear ALL.

I have a simple question.

I took a test backup (with default settings) of one virtual machine on my ESXi.

When it finished I recieve a message like:

V-79-57344-38726 - Backup Exec failed to connect to virtual machine 'My machine' and was unable to collect the necessary metadata to restore individual application items. You cannot perform GRT-enabled restores of application data from this backup. You must install the Agent for Windows and the virtual machine tools provided by your host software on the virtual machine.

I understand what it mean that I have to install BE-agent to the guest OS and I'll do it. But why this server appears in list of servers?:

NDMP: SMTAPE backups & slowness

Hi

I found the normal NDMP backups were slow so I switched to NDMP - SMTAPE backups to speed things up.  That didn't happen because they were slower.  I thought backing up 40 million files on NetApp using smtape would be better.  The normal NDMP backups ran about 20,000 KB/s the smtape version runs about 12-14,000 KB/s.  Media servers have no performance issues as they are not fully utilised and  everything is on a 10Gb/s IP network.

The only thing I have left to play with is SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS_NDMP buffer size.  Currently on the default which is close to the maximium according to http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH51967.

  • Would decreasing the  buffer size would help, given that it is a 10Gb network?
  • In NetApp can NDMP be throttled?  The NetApp admins may have throttling turned on
  • Is there anything better than this to test NetApp by doing a dump to /dev/null by runing something like

         dump 0f null /vol/vol0

    This test the speed of a dump but not NDMP to /dev/null

Exceptions on SBS 2011 Backup Jobs

I keep getting this exception on my server's full/incremental job pair:

V-79-57344-33925 - Error: ShareWebDb.mdf is a component of a SharePoint server farm. It must be backed up using the Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server. Select it for backup from the Microsoft Server SharePoint Server Farms node.

I have a Farm job, runs fine.
I do have a support case with Symantec Tech Support, but so far they are dodging the real issue and feeding me busy work.

Months ago when I installed this box, I moved the SharePoint databases and such using the SBS Console, to the "D:" data volume.. among other file shares and such.

Beginning 12/14, the Full job (on Fridays..) threw this exception.  That is thrown, as is every DB and log file for SharePoint for CompanyWeb.. which comes with SBS.

The first suggestion by support is to feed them version info and ensure my LiveUpdate is up to date.  It is.

The second suggestion was that I should exclude the SharePoint Resources and corresponding SQL instances/dbs from my main job's backup selections.. they already were.  Any SQL on this SBS box I don't care about.. my LoB server hosting an ERP product, I do care about.. not an issue to exclude all of it.

The third suggestion was that I should exclude the LDF/MDF pairs from the backup selection.

Okay.. but that turns off SDR.  YES, they are on D:, not C:.

As an MSP, I have multiple clients and multiple cases of this problem.  Some clients, I have gone so far as uninstall SP from SBS.. a different side-effect which makes SBS cry, but not Symantec's problem I guess.

 

First problem.. why aren't any of the kb articles current with Backup Exec 2012 issues? Every situation I encounter has articles about former versions.. including the "updated" articles.

Second problem.. As mentioned, this is one among at least six clients with this issue.  We using a monitoring/management system and agent.. I really want these backups to SUCCEED.. else I am looking at them daily.. so saying "meh, you know it's alright, deal with it" is not a solution.  We are looking at other backup solutions at this point.. we already abandoned Endpoint Protection about two years ago.

While I wait for the next busywork request from Support, anybody got the fix?

Is there any step from the Agents sides on the clients 

Is there any step for upgrading the agents as well to be compatible with the new version of netbackup 7.5 ???

I would Like to have a nother Netbackup master server at the same main site " Two servers" running at the same time, if when fail the anbother should be ready to backup and restore. " it is not mandotary to have automaticlly failover, as  Cluster"

my current configuration. one Master and Media server connected to VTL and T.L via FC. my Licenses is Capacity Edition.

 

WHat is the best configurations / Methods to achieve my goal? Please suggest me as many as no of method that could be implmented here.

Installing Backup Exec and Backup Exec System Recovery on Same Server.

We have a Exchange server where we Installed Backup Exec and Backup Exec System Recovery on the same. We are getting this error frequently . Any idea is appreciated One concern can we install Backup exec and Backup exec system recovery on same server. Backup exec job is failure and BESR is success.The Symatec Backup exec error is

 Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "Microsoft Information Store". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
 VSS Snapshot error. A Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot is already running on the target computer. Only one snapshot can run at a time.  Try running the job later

And in the windows event viewer I get

An attempt to open the file " for read only access failed with system error The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another processThe open file operation will fail with error -1032

I'm desperately in need to have a procedure document (Case study or Best practise) or guidance to upgrade our media server (UNIX) from NBU 6.5.6 to 7.5.

Software :  Netbackup 6.5.6 and DD BOOST NetBackup Accelerator and Management Integration (NBU 6.5.6)

H/W specs:

Oracle SPARC Enterprise M5000, Four 2 x 2.53 GHz SPARC64 VII Quad-Core Processors, 3 x StorageTek 8 Gb Fibre Channel PCIe

 

Media server also has additional functions:

• SAP Backup via BRTOOLS – Production Hosts
• SnapView Snapshot\Clone – Production Hosts and Array Manager UI
• Mount Snapshot\Clone – NetBackup Media Server
• Backup to Disk – NetBackup Master\Media Server
• Unmount and Housekeep – NetBackup Media Server
 

EMC datadomain specs:

EMC Data Doman DD880 Configured as a CIFS\NFS based storage pool with 52TB usable SATA for de-dup backup data, 2 Dual port optical Ethernet NICS, DD BOOST NetBackup Accelerator,  Management Integration DD Replicator &

If anyone has worked on such a enviroment can share their procedure document or can guide me to understand the upgrade process it will be very helpful to me :)

I've tried SORT but couldn't make a head or tail out of it, for my current setup and additional function of Media server, since this project has been thrown in from no where and EOL for 6.x already done I'm left with no assistance apart from my trusted Symantec forum.

Duplicate tape - Diff only then full only on wkend

Coming from years of Retrospect, and getting lost in my dup to tape stage with BE2012.  I want to make full backup to disk every Friday and dup that to tape.   I want to make differential backup to disk every M-R (saving last 4 days so I always have multiple diff copies) and duplicate only the day's differential to the days tape.  

Here is what I want on site

1) Disk copy of last 4 Friday FULL backups (so, 4 separate FULL backups)

2) Disk copy of Monday differential, Tues differential, Wed differential, Thursday differential.

 

Here is what I want sitting in a warm, dry, place offsite 

1) Friday tape (actually I rotate these so I have 4 different ones: 1st Friday of this month, 2nd Friday, etc)  - ONE full backup on each tape from that same day.

2) tape for Monday with differential ONLY that was just run on Monday.    Tuesday tape with Tuesday's diff to disk,  Wed tape, Thursday tape  (so these tapes are pretty short).   I could live with these being one Friday plus the daily differential, but tape is too small for every darn thing that is on disk.  

 

First part is pretty easy, but how in the world do I get part 2 w/BE?   Suggestions?  Am I missing something obvious?   In the past, this strategy has worked well for me (backups finish in reasonable time, and I have multiple full sources plus multiple diff if I ever need a bare metal restore).

Backup Exec 2012 Restore System State on Domain Controller

I'm in the middle of a recovery and used SDR to get me up to a certain point, but now I need to restore the system state from a non-SDR backup that occured later.

I boot to Directory Services Restore Mode but all my restore jobs fail because of account login issues. I came across articles that suggested changing all the services to Local System Account, but that doesn't resolve the issue. I see that under Login Accounts Backup Exec is configured to use a Domain account that obviously can't be authenticated in DSRM mode.

How and the heck to you restore System State with Backup Exec 2012?

Backup Exec 2010 System State Fails E000FEDD

I know there has been a lot of discussion and related articles for the system state backup failures. I have been through most of them and have had no success on a Windows 2003 Server with Backup Exec 2010. I have tried most of the fixes and suggestions and it completes fine with NTBackup.

I'm am still getting:

The item System?State\Active Directory\C:_WINDOWS_NTDS\ntds in use - skipped.

Disks are ok, disk space is ok, memory is ok, I have applied all updates for Windows and Backup Exec, Backups that do not include the System State run fine, System State backup with NTBackup run fine, I've tried AOFO, changed BEUtility settings, etc, etc. Nothing out there seems to help, so if anyone has any further suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

Tape eject

Is there any way to find the list of tape which has ejected from the library. Usually before eject we will make a noe of the tape id. But i forgot to take the list. Please tell me how to find the ejected tapelist.
